David Duong’s journey began during one of the most turbulent periods in modern history. In 1975, as the Vietnam War ended, millions of South Vietnamese families were forced to leave their homes in search of safety and freedom.
Before that time, David’s father had built one of South Vietnam’s largest paper and recycling businesses. When the war ended, the family lost everything—the factory, the trucks, and the life they had spent years building. Like many Vietnamese families, they fled the country by sea, facing an uncertain and dangerous journey before eventually arriving in the United States as refugees.
After months in refugee camps, the family settled in San Francisco with little more than determination and a willingness to work. They lived with relatives in a small apartment and spent long nights collecting bottles, cardboard, and recyclable materials from the streets just to survive.
For David Duong, those early years shaped a lifelong perspective: there is dignity in honest work, and value can be found in places others overlook.
Building a Business from the Ground Up
In 1983, the Duong family took their first step toward stability by starting Cogido Paper Corporation, a small recycling and export company. It was a modest operation, but it allowed the family to rebuild and begin creating new opportunities.
After several years of growth, the company was sold in 1989. With experience and capital gained from that venture, David Duong founded California Waste Solutions in 1992.
What began with a small fleet and a clear vision has grown into a major environmental services company serving hundreds of thousands of households across Oakland and San Jose.
