Recycling Right: Keep It Clean, Empty, and Dry

Recycling is one of the easiest ways we can reduce waste, but it only works when materials are prepared properly. Many people are surprised to learn that the average person throws away more than four pounds of waste every day. Recycling helps keep many of those materials out of landfills and gives them a second life.

The good news is that recycling correctly is simple. It just starts with a few easy habits at home.

Start with a Simple Sorting System

Before anything reaches the recycling cart, the process begins in the kitchen, garage, or wherever waste is collected in your home. Having separate containers for recycling, trash, and compost makes it much easier to sort materials correctly.

It’s also helpful to know what your local recycling program accepts so the right items go in the right place.

Keep Recyclables Clean, Empty, and Dry

One of the most common problems in recycling is food residue. Containers with leftover food or liquids can contaminate other recyclables.

A quick rinse is usually enough. Make sure bottles, jars, and cans are empty, clean, and dry before placing them in the recycling bin.

Leave Recyclables Loose

Another common mistake is putting recyclables inside plastic bags. Recycling facilities are designed to sort loose materials, and bags can cause problems for sorting equipment.

Instead, place items directly into the recycling cart.

Small Habits Make a Big Difference

When recyclables are sorted properly and kept clean, they can be processed and turned into new products. But when the wrong items are mixed in, entire loads of recycling may end up being thrown away.

By keeping recyclables clean, empty, and dry, and placing them loose in the cart, residents can help make sure recycling programs work the way they’re intended to.

Recycling right doesn’t take much effort but it makes a real difference for our communities and the environment.
