Behind the Scenes: The Journey of Your Recycling

Have you ever wondered what happens to the items you place in your recycling cart? Every day, recycling collected from Oakland residents is brought to the California Waste Solutions (CWS) facility, where it begins the process of being sorted and prepared for reuse.
After collection trucks gather recyclables from neighborhoods across the city, the materials are delivered to the facility and unloaded onto the tipping floor. From there, they move onto conveyor belts that carry them through a series of sorting steps. Workers and specialized equipment help separate materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, and metals.
One of the first steps is pre-sorting, where items that don’t belong in recycling—such as trash or plastic bags are removed. Contamination is one of the biggest challenges in recycling. Plastic bags can jam sorting equipment, and wet paper or cardboard can reduce the quality of recyclable materials.
Once materials are sorted, they are compressed into large bundles called bales. These bales are sent to manufacturers where they are used to produce new products, giving recyclable materials a second life.
The choices made at home play a big role in making this process work. Keeping recyclables clean, empty, dry, and loose in the cart helps ensure materials can be sorted efficiently and kept out of landfills.
